Photokina 2008

Photokina Cologne EntranceHi all, Photokina 2008 officially opened to the public on Tuesday, September 23 and will continue until Sunday, September 28, 2008, meaning the world's largest camera spectacle is now. Most exhibitors were still playing new product information close to the vest, but it's a fair bet that most of the major announcements have been put on the table. From here on out, the game is investigation and evaluation. With that in mind, here are a few choice bits to wrap up the day's barrage of news.

Canon PowerShot SX1 IS and SX10

The PowerShot SX1 IS and PowerShot SX10 IS of 10 Megapixels cameras, capturing all the necessary detail for poster-size prints or creative cropping in post processing.A powerful, pocket-sized tool ideal for capturing fast-paced action sequences A Canon CMOS sensor allows the PowerShot SX1 IS to shoot full-resolution JPEGs at speeds of up to 4fps – making it a powerful, pocket-sized tool ideal for capturing fast-paced action sequences.

Although a PowerShot SX1 IS not yet available in the U.S., the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS ultrazoom was up for hands-on examination at Canon's Photokina booth.

Olympus 1050 SW

Olympus announces the 10.1 megapixel, 3x optical zoom Stylus /  1050 SW, a robust digital camera that you may drop, wash or shoot it in below-freezing temperatures; shockproof to 1.5m, waterproof to 3m and freezeproof to -10°C.The youngest offspring of a long line of heavy-duty pocket cameras A newly-developed TAP control interface lets users trade the press of a button for the tap of a finger: adjust settings and review images on the µ 1050 SW's extra large 6.9cm / 2.7" LCD monitor by a simple tap or two to the exterior.

The camera in question in this case is Olympus's brand new Stylus 1050 SW, the youngest offspring of a long line of heavy-duty pocket cameras. The apparatus in question is the following sinister piece of demonstration equipment.

The Olympus 1050 SW will be available in the U.S. at the end of September...

Pentax K-m + DA L 18-55mm D3.5-5.6 AL - (16/9) PENTAX K-m digital SLR camera.

Looks like Pentax is taking a page out of Canon and Nikon's playbook.

It's called the Pentax K-M (M signifying 1000 in roman numerals, a throwback to the hugely popular K1000 of yester-year) it's supposed to have the image sensor and processing engine of the K200D, weather sealing, a 96% coverage pentamirror viewfinder, shake reduction, and is the smallest DSLR with in-body shake reduction available anywhere. The worst part is that the real Canon copying move is that it will have a flouro-plastic lens coupling, and Pentax will begin to release some entry level lenses with flouro-plastic lens mounts.

PS:

Besides the k-m they are also releasing: K1000, K2000 ..

About K1000: "The K1000's extraordinary longevity makes it a historically significant camera, despite its very ordinary design. Although the K1000 was already obsolete when it was first released, its inexpensive simplicity was a great virtue and earned it an unrivaled popularity as a basic but sturdy workhorse, particularly suited to educating inexperienced photographers. The Pentax K1000 eventually sold over three million units."

Elbert, when cameras are announced, they are just that: announced. They actually haven't come out yet. So, the prices should remain the same. You can't know until it's come and passed.

Is there any significant price drops to DSLR bodies when new ones are announced during Photokina?
