How to stop my dog licking himself?

Number 1 I realise its normal and healthy for dogs to clean the genitalia and it doesn't bother me. However my dog has recently had a problem with his penis being stuck out, been to the vets and he was put back in but to stop him he has been wearing a cone for the last 2 weeks.

I have taken it off today and the vets said we need to make sure he doesn't lick himself and bring his penis back out. If it comes out again he has to be stitched with only a little hole to pee. So my question is, is there anything I can put on his penis that will stop him licking and his save for him to digest and be on such a sensitive area?

Sounds like He's just trying to soothe his pain, it's instinct for dogs to lick their wounds, I'd say if you think he's in any kind of pain that you should ask your vet if you can get him some pills, but honestly I think the only thing you can do is tell him no and stop him and keep an eye on him

Dogs will lick themselves for two reasons: behavior or physical. Some dogs will lick excessively when they are stressed. A dog with this type of behavior problem will only be helped when you uncover the underlying reason for the behavior. What is the dog stressed or nervous about?

Once you find out the underlying reason and deal with it, the behavior should go away. Dogs with physical problems will also lick excessively. It could be related to food such as a poor diet or allergy to one of the ingredients. Check the ingredients.

Check to see if there are any other irritants that may be causing the licking. Some dogs will develop problems during the winter or spring due to salt or lawn treatments.

Another thing you might try is catching him in the act say NO BAD DOG and scold him when he stops you treat him with a treat or his favorite toy, this will give him something else to do with his mouth rather then lick
