The Best Dog Food For Skin Problems

Gus, Airport Dog Park Favorites, April 2008, Minneapolis, MN I have learnt by my mistakes. My present dog has dreadful problems because of the food which I gave her. Her skin is red and she has a lot of scabs from biting, so my main goal is to soothe her skin.

I experimented with dog food, I tried raw diets, cooked diets and over the years I tried various dog foods.

Eventually, because of my researches on the Internet I found that the experts have discovered that GRAIN in our dog's diet causes many problems. I now know that grain creates acidity in the blood. This causes skin problems, digestive issues, allergies, sickness, diarrhoea, anal gland problems etc.,

If your dog has skin problems or any of the above problems PLEASE CHANGE THE DIET.

I now give my dog a dried food which uses beet for fibre and fish. Look on the Internet and investigate yourself. Gluten free dog food is not enough to help our dogs, it MUST BE GRAIN FREE.

Also If your dog has itchy skin, the beginnings of a hot spot, incessantly washes its feet, has smelly ears, or is picky about his food, the application of Apple cider vinegar may change things around. For poor appetite, use it in the food - 1 tablespoon, two times a day for a 50 lb. dog. For itchy skin or beginning hot spots, put Apple cider vinegarĀ  into a spray bottle, part the hair and spray on. Any skin eruption will dry up in 24 hours and will save you having to shave the dog. If the skin is already broken, dilute Apple cider vinegarĀ  with an equal amount of water and spray on.

Also now I use John Paul Sebastian Pet Shampoo for my dog. I'ts aloe and oatmeal based shampoo for dogs with dry, sensitive skin. Also, good ideas about adding oil to your dog's food. Use an Omega 3 fish oil tablet.

I feed every dog in my kennel a raw natural prey based diet. Mostly muscle meat, some liver, heart, and other organs as well. All of my dogs are diabetes and allergy free with healthy coats (my Shepherds don't shed all year round anymore, only in the spring). They also no longer have build ups of tarter which can cause tooth decay and infections in the gums which is a major cause of renal failure in kibble fed dogs. Feeding raw can be expensive if you buy from the grocery store but if you call your butcher you'll be suprised how inexpensive whole chickens, some of the cuts of stew beef, and turkey are. They practically give away the organs. I actually spend less money feeding my dogs now than I ever have, you can also buy in bulk and keep everything in a deep freezer, that's a big money saver. I hope I helped, and more importantly for your dog, I hope you switch. Dogs don't get salmonella poisoning. Dogs are designed to eat raw foods. Dogs lick their rears and don't die from e. coli, my dogs eat raw chicken and raw eggs every day, and they're all fine. They're all Schutzhund trained and do a workout every day, they're in top form. A dog can eat a 2 week old dead carcass and be fine, their saliva, stomach acid, and immune system stops the bacteria that would kill us dead in it's tracks. I'm a professional GSD breeder/trainer who has fed raw for 8 years.

Ok, wheat, corn and soy - they're not good for the coat dogs. Add an Omega 3 Fatty acid (a fish oil supplement) to your dog's food. You can get this at a pet food store or you can get human grade at the drug store (ask your vet for dosage). If you get it at a pet food store, read th ingredients some of them have wheat in the ingredients.

Top allergens to avoid are corn, chicken, beef, soy, wheat, and dairy - although any dog can be allergic to any food. Skin problems are almost always a result of an allergy, an expression of a weak immune system. Teh switch to the proper ingredients and the addition of the omega -3's should slove that altogether.

Eat Drink Dog Cat by Kym.. Pippie, the black cat, is eating dog food on the floor while Fox is drinking. Fox always slops his food out the bowl to everywhere on the floor, and Pippie eats it. A good duo! I have dogs and cats with many skin problems and allergies. Also I have been reading really scary things about commercial dog foods and now have been really considering making my own dog food. I have been doing some research online but can't seem to find...

Well, the absolute best you could feed your dogs would be a raw prey model diet. Ok, grains are the number one allergen for dogs, and they also cause other health issues.

I use Evo and Nature's Variety both make grain free kibble, but I'm sure there are other brands.

Sometimes dogs get itchy skin because of things that are not really skin-related .. oh ... a food allergy .. one of the first things you should ... try using fish oil capsules mixed in with your dog's food. Ok, you need also want to consider switching to a better quality food.

Little Shitzu

Ok, many dogs suffer allergies because many Dogt foods are bulked up with unnecessary fillers like corn and rice, which dogs don't need, and haven't evolved to need.

Dogs are carnivores (science proves it) and have evolved to eat other animals - whole animals. Therefore, they should be fed animal (a typical diet should include organ, muscle and bone). Add an omega 3 fatty acid like fish or salmon oil - also is a great idea. Fish oil is a great supplement for skin.

Oatmeal is a great thing for skin. It helps to soothe and smooth skin for everyone, including dogs. Give your dog an oatmeal bath, which you can get from your vet or from Walgreens' drug store. Aveeno makes one. If you can't find oatmeal soap or an oatmeal bath, run some dry whole oats through the blender and mix it with water and soothe the doggy skin with it. He'll appreciate this no end!
