SPECIAL SKILLS: The Owczarek Podhalanski, also known as the Polish Tatra Sheepdog, originated in the Podhale, a small, mountainous region in southern Poland. Herder and watchdog. Its imposing attitude and beautiful appearance make it a good companion dog. Without Working Group trial. Of strong and compact build giving the impression of stamina and mobility. The Tatra sheepdog is a big, strong, impressive shepherd dog with rather long, white, rough to the touch and rather straight fur coat - resistant to climatic conditions. This dog is given special intelligence and instinct, it is watchful but not noisy. It has a rather low stimulation threshold, though in extreme conditions is it fearless. It is distrustful of strangers, but faithful and completely devoted to the master and his family, caring and good for children.

SIZE: Height at withers For males 65-70cm, for bitches 60-65cm. It is a harmoniously built dog, big but not overgrown. Exceeding the height limit by ca. 5 % is not a fault, provided that the overall proportions remain the same, the skeleton would follow the height. It should not be a high-legged dog with light bones. The compact build is important.

COAT: COAT: HAIR: On head, muzzle, frontpart of forelegs and on the hindlegs from the hock downward the hair is short and dense. The neck and the body are covered with long, thick, straight or slightly wavy hair, hard to the touch. Undercoat profuse. On the neck a rich ruff ; the thighs are covered with profuse, long hair ; on the tail hair also profuse, forming a flag. COLOUR: Uniformly white ; little cream coloured patches are undesirable. The breed norm gives detailed requirements for the fur coat. Only in the issue of colour I would like to stress the fact that some Polski Owczarek Podhalanskis (especially the ones which are bred outdoor) may have at the first sight a little cream colour of hair. The true colour of hair should be examined near the skin, and this is decisive.

CARE REQUIRED: Except during the time when the dog is shedding little attention is needed to maintain the coat on this dog, which does not readily tangle. During shedding this breed needs regular grooming with brush and comb to remove loose and dead hair

CHARACTER: The Owczarek Podhalanski is a strong and well bound dog. Its body is impressive, expressing both power and mobility. Its temperament is calm and grave. The breed is intelligent and alert. He will respect his owner only if this one is patient, full of confidence, without shouts, without screams, in the respectful accompaniment of his maturation. But it will not have to be forgotten that the master must become his "pack chief ", that his authority shall not be contested, and that a lax education will not be compatible with the very character of the Podhale Sheperd . It is imperative to educate a Polski Owczarek who must learn the rules of hierarchy as of its youth. The Polski Owczarek is a dog that desocializes himself extremely fast , it is imperative to have some free time at least during the first year of his life in order to walk out with him at least twice a week downtown and let him «to be groped » by a lot of persons who are not members of the family

TRAINING: Training needs to be consistent and conducted in peace and harmony. Treating these dogs severely works counter-productively. The breed can be somewhat stubborn and refuse to obey commands to which they see no point

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: The Podhale Sheperd must live free, free of his time and his moves so that his senses of observation, reflexion and action can express themselves. This is not an appartment dog, a ground is essential for him. He needs some light, sun, air, wind, and rain on his coat for this one to be beautiful, he must be able to run and jump whenever he wants so that his skeletal structure and his musculature develop. His affection for " his pack " is not compatible with a kennel life, because he would suffer from feeling useless.

EXERCISE: Dealing with its behaviour requires consistency and determination in enforcing the desired behaviour. Just like any social animal it needs constant contact with its master and with people. A Polski Owczarek Podhalanski raised at house, in a garden, on a farm or on a grazing field with sheep, but always in the contact with people, is an invaluable companion and friend and may play many important, useful roles, for which it is undoubtedly predisposed. Moving on to the anatomy of the Polski Owczarek Podhalanski, we should bear in mind the dog's functional qualities and interpret the breed norm from that angle, without violating the norm's requirements.
