More than 4.7 Million people become victims of dog bites each year! Most of these victims are children. This is a serious issue and must be given great attention to. Dogs are a source of happiness and companionship. Most of us adore our pet dogs. However, these days pet dogs have become an issue to worry about, when they start biting passers-by, neighbors and guests.
Ever wondered why do dogs bite? Dog bites are not caused by bad dogs but by irresponsible dog owners. A well trained and cultured dog will never bite. Dogs who have not been properly socialized, who are not supervised or safely confined, who have not been spayed or neutered, or who receive little attention, are most likely to bite a person.
Now, the Question is how you can prevent your dog from biting?
You may adopt many methods that are useful in preventing your dog from biting. One of the most popular methods is to spray or neuter your dog. There are chances that your dog will bite three times less than usual.
Socializing your dog is necessary to teach it, some good manners and treat people around it. This is also beneficial in curbing your dog's habit to bite people around it. So, provide socialization to your dog and see it behaving properly with you, your relatives, friends, and guests.
Another important thing is to obedience training to your dog. If you want your dog behave properly in public and causes less embarrassment, you must follow an obedience training program for your dog. The includes teaching your dog certain good habits, praising it for obeying orders given during the training schedule and above all keeping it away from all bad habits such as excessive chewing, barking, digging etc. Believe us; obedience training would make your dog, a good citizen rather than a terrorist. Remember, that pet dogs are a part of our family and hence, should live inside with the family. Avoid isolating your dog. Isolating your dog it lonely and frustrated; thereby causing dog bite.
These are some measures; you must adopt to stop your dog from biting people around them. However, there may be many untrained and un-socialized dogs in/around your area, children may become victims of their biting. To avoid this, you must keep your children away from a strange dog.
Both fearful and aggressive dogs can bite.
- Don't at run a dog; instead stand still, with arms down at side, and look down- away from the dog.
- Instruct the dog to "be a tree" and small children to curl up in a 'rock position'.
- Don't attack a dog in an attempt to play with it. It may enrage the dog; thereby encouraging it to bite. Substitute toys instead of hands.
- It would be wise to avoid challenging a dog by staring, baring teeth, taking away its toys or food.
- Avoid bothering a new litter.
- Be respectful of dogs. Try to respect its privacy, needs and requirements.
- Do not tease them. This actually enrages a dog, and will cause dog biting.
- Try to become a tree or a rock whenever an aggressive dog crosses the way.
The above mentioned precautions would definitely benefit you to deal with aggressive & untrained dogs.
